UKIP Sheffield has responded to claims that the Turkish government will seek the extradition of the Duchess of York on 'privacy' charges after she uncovered poor treatment of Turkish orphans for a documentary.
The offence is not a crime under UK law so the Home Office have no legal grounds to extradite - but the situation would be far different if Turkey were in the European Union.
UKIP Sheffield Chairman Jonathan Arnott said:
"The reason that we have a say about extradition is that Turkey is not a member of the EU. If it were an EU country, we would have no choice but to extradite her because a European Arrest Warrant could be issued. The European Arrest Warrant has caused many innocent people to be sent abroad to face trial - with our own courts powerless to stop it."
